Το Ίδρυμα Βασίλη και Ελίζας Γουλανδρή ιδρύθηκε το 1979. Πρόκειται για έναν κοινωφελή μη κερδοσκοπικό οργανισμό, που έχει ως κύριο σκοπό του την ενίσχυση των τεχνών και ιδιαίτερα των εικαστικών. Επιδίωξη των ιδρυτών Βασίλη και Ελίζας Γουλανδρή ήταν η θέσπιση και λειτουργία ενός αποκεντρωμένου πολιτιστικού θεσμού με απήχηση εκτός εθνικών ορίων. Ο Βασίλης Π. Γουλανδρής ήταν ο πρώτος Πρόεδρος του Ιδρύματος· τον διαδέχθηκε το 1994 η σύντροφος της ζωής του Ελίζα Β. Γουλανδρή. Από το 2000 Πρόεδρος του Ιδρύματος είναι η ανηψιά της, Fleurette Π. Καραδόντη.

Το Ίδρυμα Βασίλη και Ελίζας Γουλανδρή εγκαινίασε το 1979 το Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης στην Άνδρο, γενέτειρα του Βασίλη Π. Γουλανδρή , το οποίο επεκτάθηκε σε μια νέα πτέρυγα το 1986. Οι χώροι του Μουσείου σχεδιάστηκαν σύμφωνα με τις πιο σύγχρονες μουσειακές προδιαγραφές με σκοπό να φιλοξενήσoυν τα έργα της συλλογής του Ιδρύματος αλλά και τις περιοδικές εκθέσεις σημαντικών καλλιτεχνών του 20ού αιώνα (Braque, Mirό, Toulouse-Lautrec, Moore, Klee, Giacometti, Chagall, Rodin, De Chirico, κ.ά.) που διοργανώνονται κάθε καλοκαίρι, από το 1986.

Το Ίδρυμα ενισχύει επίσης τις τέχνες με την καθιέρωση από το 1986 ενός προγράμματος υποτροφιών για μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές στο εξωτερικό πάνω σε θέματα που έχουν άμεση σχέση με τον πολιτισμό.

Εκτός από τις πολιτιστικές δραστηριότητες, η κοινωνική μέριμνα και η αρωγή είναι άλλος ένας σκοπός του Ιδρύματος. Η ανέγερση, ο εξοπλισμός και η συντήρηση του υποδειγματικού ευγηρείου «Εστία Αθηνών» όπως και η ανακαίνιση δύο περιπτέρων στο Γηροκομείο Αθηνών εντάσσονται στον γενικότερο αυτό σκοπό του Ιδρύματος.

The Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation was established in 1979. It is a non-profit organisation for public benefit, whose main objective is to support and promote the visual arts. The founding donors, Basil and Elise Goulandris, wished to establish an international decentralised cultural institution, which would reflect the spirit and meet the demands of our times. Basil P. Goulandris was the Foundation’s first President, and in 1994 was succeeded by his wife, Elise Goulandris. From 2000 onwards, President of the Foundation is Elise Goulandris’ niece, Fleurette P. Karadontis.

In 1979 the Foundation inaugurated the Museum of Contemporary Art on Andros, birthplace of Basil P. Goulandris. It was later to be augmented by the addition of a new wing in 1986. The spaces were designed according to the latest museological standards in order to both house the Foundation’s permanent collection and to organise seasonal temporary exhibitions of significant 20th -century artists (Braque, Mirό, Toulouse-Lautrec, Moore, Klee, Giacometti, Chagall, Rodin, De Chirico, etc.).

In order to support cultural development and artistic creation in Greece, from 1986 onwards the Foundation has also been awarding scholarships for post graduate studies abroad on subjects related to art.

The Foundation, however, is also active in the field of social welfare and relief. It has constructed, outfitted, and is continuing to maintain the Home for the Elderly “Estia Athinon”. In addition, it has renovated the two pavilions of the Old People’s Home of the Athens Charitable Society.
