Ιστορικό:
1912. O Θεόδωρος Α. Zουμπουλάκης ανοίγει στην Αθήνα, το γνωστό στους συλλεκτικούς κύκλους της εποχής, παλαιοπωλείο με σπάνια έργα τέχνης και αρχαιότητες.

1960. Συνεχίζοντας την οικογενειακή παράδοση, η οικογένεια Ζουμπουλάκη επεκτείνει τις δραστηριότητες της στην οδό Κριεζώτου 3. Εκεί, σε έναν ειδικά διαμορφωμένο χώρο εκθέτουν για πρώτη φορά γνωστοί καλλιτέχνες της γενιάς του ‘30 (Τσαρούχης, Χατζηκυριάκος-Γκίκας, Νικολάου, Μόραλης, Τέτσης και άλλοι σημαντικοί καλλιτέχνες και γλύπτες).

1966. O Τάσος με την Πέγκυ Ζουμπουλάκη ανοίγουν στον ίδιο δρόμο (Κριεζώτου 7) την πρώτη τους γκαλερί σύγχρονης τέχνης, όπου συμπεριλαμβάνονται καλλιτέχνες της γενιάς του ’60 που την εποχή εκείνη ζούσαν με υποτροφίες στο εξωτερικό. Ανάμεσα τους είναι ο Φασιανός, ο Τσόκλης, ο Pavlos, ο Ακριθάκης, ο Κεσσανλής, κ.ά. Συγχρόνως αρχίζει η συνεργασία της γκαλερί με τον Αλέξανδρο Ιόλα. Ονόματα όπως De Chirico, Μatta, Lallannes, Rauschenberg, Man Ray εκθέτουν για πρώτη φορά σε ελληνική γκαλερί.

1973. H Γκαλερί Ζουμπουλάκη επιχειρεί κάτι πρωτοποριακό για τα δεδομένα των γκαλερί εκείνης της εποχής. Επεκτείνει τις δραστηριότητες της σε έναν καινούργιο χώρο 450 τμ, στο πιο νευραλγικό σημείο της Αθήνας, στην πλατεία Κολωνακίου 20. Εκεί οι καλλιτέχνες έχουν πια για πρώτη φορά στα ελληνικά δεδομένα στη διάθεσή τους έναν τεράστιο ενιαίο χώρο με σύγχρονες προδιαγραφές για να αναδείξουν τη δουλειά τους σε ευρύτερη κλίμακα και να παρουσιάσουν έργα μεγάλων διαστάσεων.
Ο γλύπτης Τάκης, γνωστός ήδη στο εξωτερικό, εγκαινιάζει τον καινούργιο χώρο της γκαλερί με μια εκπληκτική παρουσίαση της πιο σημαντικής του δουλειάς. Ακολουθεί η Chryssa, που για πρώτη φορά στην Ελλάδα παρουσιάζει μια σειρά από τα τεράστια γνωστά σε όλο τον κόσμο γλυπτά της.
Μια νέα εποχή αρχίζει για τα πολιτιστικά δρώμενα της Αθήνας και η Γκαλερί Ζουμπουλάκη δίνει πια το στίγμα μιας άλλης εποχής. Ο Ιόλας φέρνει ονόματα σημαντικών ξένων καλλιτεχνών. Παράλληλα η Γκαλερί Ζουμπουλάκη συνεργάζεται με τη γνωστή γκαλερί Denise Rene στο Παρίσι, με τη γκαλερί Beyeler στην Βασιλεία με έκθεση Picasso και τη γκαλερί Gimpel στο Λονδίνο. Θεαματικές εκθέσεις όπως “το Νεορεαλιστικό Κίνημα”, που οργάνωσε ο τεχνοκριτικός Pierre Restany, η έκθεση “Mirrors of the Mind”, που επιμελήθηκε και προλόγισε ο φίλος της γκαλερί, Νικόλας Κάλλας, και πολλές ακόμα ενδιαφέρουσες εκδηλώσεις λαμβάνουν χώρα στη γκαλερί.

1995. Η Γκαλερί Ζουμπουλάκη αποκτά έναν ακόμα εκθεσιακό χώρο στην πολιτιστικά ανερχόμενη περιοχή της Αθήνας, την Πειραιώς. Ένα παλιό εργοστάσιο διαμορφώνεται από τον αρχιτέκτονα Θοδωρή Ζουμπουλάκη σε χώρο πολλαπλών πολιτιστικών εκδηλώσεων. Εκθέσεις γλυπτικής, φωτογραφίας, συναυλίες, θέατρο, happenings. Οργανώνονται, επίσης, εκθέσεις που έχουν στόχο τη συνύπαρξη του σύγχρονου με το παλιό με επιλεγμένα έργα, έπιπλα και αντικείμενα που αντέχουν στον χρόνο, κάτι που βρήκε γρήγορα ανταπόκριση στο ελληνικό κοινό.

2000. Η Δάφνη Ζουμπουλάκη αναλαμβάνει τη διεύθυνση της Γκαλερί της Πλατείας Κολωνακίου. Καλλιτέχνες της γενιάς του ‘80 και ‘90 πλαισιώνουν τους μόνιμους συνεργάτες, ενώ παράλληλα από το 2007 με το σχήμα «ΖΟΝΕ D» www.zone-d.gr διοργανώνει εκθέσεις εκτός χώρου της γκαλερί, με στόχο την παρουσίαση νέων τάσεων της διεθνούς σύγχρονης τέχνης.

2007. «Αrt-Design-Antiques» άλλος ένας καινούργιος ιδιόκτητος χώρος στην οδό Κριεζώτου 6. Με στόχο τη συνύπαρξη της σύγχρονης τέχνης με το χτες και το αύριο, η Γκαλερί Ζουμπουλάκη επιχειρεί έναν αυθεντικό τρόπο αισθητικής εσωτερικών χώρων. Τίποτα δεν έχει σχέση με τη βιομηχανοποιημένη πολυτέλεια, τη σοβαροφάνεια ή τη βαρετή καταπίεση της αστικής νοοτροπίας. Μια πρόταση για έναν πιο καλλιτεχνικό, πιο ανεπιτήδευτο, πιο ελεύθερο τρόπο ζωής με φαντασία, ποιότητα, διαχρονικότητα και … humor!

Η γκαλερί αρχίζει συνεργασία με οίκους του εξωτερικού, την Established & Sons, την Astier De Villatte, την Magis κ.λπ. Το πρωτοποριακό τραπέζι /γλυπτό Aqua Table της Zaha Hadid, καθώς και το γραφείο Baobab του Philippe Starck εντάσσονται και αρμονικά και διαχρονικά στον χώρο.

1912. Theodoros A Zoumboulakis opens an antiques shop in Athens. Specializing in rare artworks and antiquities, the shop becomes well known among the collectors of the period.

1960. Continuing the tradition, the Zoumboulakis family expands its business to 3 Kriezotou Street. In a customized space at this address, they begin to exhibit the work of the generation of the 30’s; including Tsarouhis, Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas, Nikolaou, Moralis, Tetsis, and other significant artists of the period.

1966. Tassos and Peggy Zoumboulakis open their first contemporary art gallery at 7 Kriezotou St. They exhibit, among others, the works of artists from the generation of the 60’s, who at that time were on scholarships abroad, such as Fassianos, Tsoklis, Pavlos, Akrithakis, Kessanlis, and others. The gallery’s association with Alexander Iolas begins, bringing the work of De Chirico, Μatta, Lallannes, Rauschenberg, and Man Ray to exhibition in Greece for the first time.

1973 . The Zoumboulakis Gallery takes a radical step for a gallery of that period, opening a new, 450 square metre exhibition space at 20 Kolonaki Square, in the nerve-centre of Athens. This massive space is the first of its kind in Greece, offering artists a state-of the-art venue for the display of large-scale works, and attracting a broader audience to contemporary art.
Takis, already well-known abroad as a sculptor, inaugurates the gallery with a stunning array of his most important work. Chryssa follows after, with the first Greek showing of her massive, world-renowned sculptures.
A new cultural age is dawning in Athens, and the Zoumboulakis Gallery bears the hallmark of a new era. Through Iolas, important foreign artists are becoming known here, whilst the Zoumboulakis Gallery is forging collaborations; with the Denise René Gallery in Paris, the Beyeler Gallery in Basle for a Picasso exhibition, and with Gimpel Fils in London. The Gallery hosts such spectacular exhibitions as The Neorealist Movement curated by the art critic Pierre Restany, and Mirrors of the Mind which was curated and introduced by the poet and friend of the Gallery, Nicolas Callas, and many other events of note.

1995. The Zoumboulakis Gallery acquires an additional exhibition space, off Pireos Avenue, in the emerging cultural district of Athens. A former factory, it is transformed by the architect Theodore Zoumboulakis into a multi-purpose cultural space capable of hosting exhibits, concerts, theatre performances and happenings. Particularly notable are exhibits examining the coexistence of the contemporary with the old, placing carefully selected timeless objects in conversation with modern works. These exhibits prove immediately popular with the Greek public.

2000. Daphne Zoumboulakis takes over the management of the Kolonaki Square Gallery. Artists from the generations of the 80’s and 90’s join the Gallery. In 2007, the Zone D project is established to mount exhibitions outside the gallery spaces, showcasing new trends in contemporary art.

2007. With the opening of Art-Design-Antiques, a new proprietary space at 6 Kriezotou Street, the Zoumboulakis Galleries continue to expand and diversify. Here, contemporary art coexists with the past and the future, towards a genuine aesthetics of interiors. There is no pompousness here, none of the manufactured luxury of the urban mindset; instead this approach is original, and informed by an artistic sensibility. It proposes a different, unpretentious way of life; timeless, rooted in quality, imagination . . . and humour!

The Gallery forges collaborations with international companies, such as Established & Sons, Astier De Villatte, Magis, and others. Such timeless, harmonious works as the innovative table/sculpture Aqua Table by Zaha Hadid, and Phillippe Starcks’s Baobab desk are introduced to the space.
